The next three days at Bonnaroo most definitely
lived up to expectations, so I’ll see how
many stories we can fit into one update. Elliott
made his way backstage with CD101 to meet the
rapper Matisyahu and Zabel managed to find himself
on the main stage for moe.’s second set
while the rest of us used our volunteer status
to find the staff showers (one of Bonnaroo’s
simpler pleasures). Crank, Stepho, and Viv all
got to chat with Zach from the Hot Buttered Rum
Band; they’ve been touring in a veggie-powered
bus for over two years. Stepho also tended to
a little sparrow that had lost its mom (RIP Squeakers).
Viv’s thumb tried seceding from her hand
(long story) while Sunshine maintained his status
as a Silent Disco mainstay. Inspired by the antics
of Viva La Mustache, Brian embarked upon a fruitful
experiment with facial hair. Mikey and I got to
tool around back stage with the help of PlanetRoo
coordinators Nick and Maria and cameraman Will
in search of veggie oil, but our favorite collection
stop was definitely Plater's BBQ where we
explained the origin of the falafel (pronounced
fah-LOO-loo?) and answered non-sequitur questions
like “What is a humus (HOO-mus)?”.
Not to mention the publicity garnered by Zach
Carson’s brainchild, the 1st Annual Pod3
Coed Naked Slip and Slide. Whoever says all facetime
is good facetime clearly hasn’t seen as
much drooping flab as we saw Sunday morning.
As for the music, the festival lived up to all
expectations so I’ll wrap up this wrap-up
with our picks for the weekend’s best sets:
- Mikey: Buddy Guy
- Viv: Common/Blackalicious, Cat Empire
- Elliott: Cat Empire, Radiohead, Beck
- Sunshine: Beck, Neville Brothers
- Brian: Buddy Guy, Beck
- Lissa: Beck’s Puppet Video (“I smell
hippies.”)
- Crank: Matisyahu, Nickel Creek (doing Britney’s
Toxic)
- Stepho: Atmosphere
- Ross: Steel Pulse, Phil Lesh
- Myself: Buddy Guy, Robert Randolph, Beck
- Forrest
